St. Augustine Settles the Battle of the Sexes

From the holy bishop’s seventy-second sermon:

adam eve expelled

Couldn’t Christ the Lord have become man without a mother, seeing that he was able to do so without a father? …Would it have been difficult for the Wisdom of God, the power of God, the only-begotten Son of God, would it have been difficult for him to make the man whom he was to attach to himself from whatever material he wished?

But…he wished to have a human being as mother…Christ wished to adopt the male sex in himself, and he was happy to honor the female sex in his mother. You see, right at the beginning the woman too sinned…each partner was taken by the devil’s evil deceit.

If Christ, then, had come as a man without any acknowledgement of the female sex, woman would have despaired of themselves…

In fact, he honored both sexes, he acknowledged both, he took both to himself. He was born of a woman; don’t despair, men; Christ was happy to be a man. Don’t despair, women; Christ was happy to be born of a woman.

Thoughts? Is God sexist? Is He a feminist?

  1. I don’t think God is sexist or a feminist. He is fair. I think some humans are sexist or feminist. Some humans are not fair.

If you go to God and plead your cause He will deal with you fairly. His judgment is true because He is all seeing and all knowing God not human.

  2. I think God is a feminist. Now before anyone starts calling me crazy, to be a feminist simply means to fight for or believe in equal rights for both men and women. So I think God is fair, like you said nb, which would make God a feminist.

So again I answer yes, God is a feminist, he sees all his children as equals.

  3. Hear a story about a man who once asked, “God why do you allow such war, hatred, poverty and prejudice on earth?”. God replied, “You tell me. Why do you allow such war, hatred, poverty and prejudice on earth?”, “For you are my hand, my body and my feet on earth.” Amen.

  4. Sorry Sarah, I must disagree. Feminists believe that the shouldn’t just be equal to men, but the same. Yes, we women are created equal, but we are not the same. God made men and women the way we are because we are made in image of Him, but in differnt ways
